There is a saying making the rounds with photographers that goes “f8 and be there” f8 stands for a camera setting. The “be there” part is so true. You can’t take a great shot if you don’t show up.

Sometimes luck is all you need

June 10, 2024

Back in 2018, A perfect solar alignment just made my day.

On the rugged shores of Ruby Beach, nestled within the enchanting Olympic Peninsula, nature often reveals its most captivating moments. Amongst the crashing waves and towering sea stacks, one particular evening stood out, a scene so remarkable that it etched itself into memory like an indelible stroke of artistry.

As the sun descended towards the horizon, casting a golden hue upon the coastline, I found myself drawn to a solitary sea stack, standing proud amidst the tumultuous waves. Its weathered surface bore witness to the ceaseless passage of time, yet it retained an aura of timeless beauty. Little did I know, this moment would gift me a breathtaking spectacle.

With each passing minute, the sun inched closer to the perfect alignment with a natural aperture in the heart of the sea stack. As if choreographed by some celestial maestro, a radiant burst of sunlight pierced through the opening, illuminating the scene with an ethereal glow. The effect was mesmerizing, a symphony of light and shadow playing out against the canvas of the evening sky.

This is what the seastack looked like in 1995 on my first visit to Ruby Beach

In that fleeting instant, I felt a profound sense of awe and gratitude. To witness such a spectacle of nature's grandeur was a privilege beyond words. It was a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us, often hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered by those who pause to look.

Capturing the scene through the lens of my camera, I couldn't help but marvel at the serendipity of it all. To stumble upon such a moment of perfect alignment was a stroke of luck, a fleeting gift from the universe. Yet, it was also a testament to the patience and reverence required to truly appreciate the wonders of the natural world.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of crimson and gold, I lingered on the beach, reluctant to let go of the magic that had unfolded before my eyes. In that tranquil moment, surrounded by the beauty of Ruby Beach, I found solace and inspiration, a reminder of the infinite wonders that await those who dare to seek them.

As I walked away from the shore, the memory of that sunset remained etched in my mind, a vivid reminder of the beauty and brilliance that grace our world each and every day. It was a moment I would cherish forever, a testament to the timeless allure of nature's symphony.
